“If you enjoyed Free Willy, you’ll love this new face cream

The BBC mourns on behalf of the world of tree-huggery as a right-on, eco-friendly whale safari stumbles across some Norwegians enjoying a safari of their own.

“This really wasn't what we came to see” opined one sensitive soul, stumbling ashen-faced off the Love Boat upon their return. Well, honestly, what did they expect? They went to see whales in their natural habitat, and that natural habitat includes whalers with Freudian issues and harpoons to match. The result is not going to be pretty. If you don’t want to see that sort of thing, go on a tofu safari instead.

It’s all so typical of that breed of whining hippies, who have no more grasp of the workings of Mother Nature than you get from reading the first three pages of “Earth In The Balance” and wearing Birkenstocks. On similar jaunts to Africa no-one complains when the lions grab a snack out of a passing zebra, so why single the Vikings out? Norwegians, let us not forget, are part of the ecosystem too, you know. Each had a mother…

Whale and Norwegian in perfect harmony, yesterday. All part of the circle of life…

It's funny how those who laud Mother Earth and natural selection, suddenly develop a morality of sorts, when humans come into the picture. One can't have it both ways, methinks.

Cheers.

Yup - same crap as with the Voluntary Human Extinction folks - "we humans should make ourselves extinct, to leave the Earth's precious natural resources for wildlife - such as the Ethiopians...". Racist and condescending - what a charming combination.

So you don't mind me wearing my age-old mink? They are vermin you know.

More power to you, Pat. I'll be the first one to punch out one of these PETA clowns, if they trouble you.

Cheers.

You don't tend to see these types crying over dead rats or wasps the less cuddly dritters. Hypocrites

I might be the lone voice of dissent here but my view is that "hunting" has lost all its hairy-chested lore. What with echo-location and precision ballistics we are using the brains God gave us to decimate whatever happens to be in our pecuniary interest that decade. Neither "necessity" nor "sport" could account for

The minke whale may not be endangered, but I think this post has a broader missive in attacking environmental "types". There are, most certainly, environmental Cassandra types who will cry woe-betide-you wolf over such grave moral issues as the Care and Husbandry of Goldfish, but wackos shouldn't be allowed to define the debate.

What I'm contesting here isn't the opinion that Norwegian whales should be spared the fate of the common-or-garden rabbit in a famine, but - what I might be mistakingly taking as - a lumping together of everyone who has ever watched and heeded a David Attenborough documentary. I am a mild-mannered save-the-whales type for whom the scent of patchouli oil is gag-making and the desire for tofu dishes, less than raging.

I love ya Uncle Vanya, you know I do, and I can see how the assumed delicacies of the tourist may be Ivan-fodder (I agree - we can watch "Schindler's List" but we can't stomach a filter-feeder dying?) but why so hostile to the environmentalists?

I've been well (well) over-served at quiz-night at the bar (we won! Huzzah!) and inclined towards dissent just...because. Just thought some disagreement might be OK to include.

How's the newest wee Terrible doing?

Uncle Vanya? I like it. As long as that's not a Chekhov reference. Not that I don't love Chekhov. "Yis Kaptain - course plotted and locked in!" Pure poetry.

Point taken regarding "moderate" environmentalists, such as yourself. Not everyone goes all PETA and threatens to stab actual people for alleged crimes against barn owls. But there's enough of the other sort to keep me in jokes for a while yet.

Still, can't help feeling that there's a lingering touch of Hebridean post-colonial chippiness towards the old Norse mother country there, Sam. I mean, come on - it was eight hundred years ago! Time to move on...

BTW - new Terriblet doing fine, thanks for asking. Eating and sleeping well, DG.

It's not quite true that no one complains when lions grab a Zebra - the Zebra complains like hell. It's just that everyone ignores it.

Plenty of those Voluntary Human Extinctionists would like to see the Ethiopians go first.

Go watch Penn and Teller's "Bullsh*t" series, they got one for the PETA types. You can find it on Google video. Cool stuff.
