Cock-blogged

Creeping horror disturbs my rest, as whenever I try to migrate to the new blogger beta it tells me I can’t do it. Anyone know what’s going on there? I’m beginning to feel put upon. Maybe I’ve been blacklisted?

See? This is what happens when you guys keep rabbiting on about certain religious minorities in the comments…

Red Seamen are busy blacklisting other, more dangerous people, Ivan -- couple of wranglers at Wrathful Joe's Pub don't bother nobody in Tel Aviv. Or were you talking about that otherminority -- the ones whose sand covers our oil, perhaps?

We are all minorities in my state. I guess that means we need to watch everybody else, as surely they are all up to no good. It's a bit exhausting really.

Generally I avoid beta software when it has the potential to damage other things that are working fine. Remember the experience of American soldiers in Vietnam, as they were the beta-testers for the M-16... They re-learned a valuable lesson: "You can always tell who the pioneers were. They are the ones with the arrows in their back."

Ivan, you seem to be doing well enough without the WYSIWYG baubles of the Beta. As with most of the novelties stamped with the Google branding, the flashy promise of the "new and advanced" is often followed by thunderous of disappointment.

Content is the most important attribute of a website, as long as the blogger servers let you and your readers post, I'll probably keep it bookmarked. Then again, maybe I'll delete the bookmark just out of spite. Remember I'm a minority, and we tend to do that.

Des, I think Ivan was trying to get the attention of someone who is in a minority of one. Not content with being a leading authority on 'The Jewish Question', he wants to win acclaim as a second Oscar Wilde. Too much ambition is his problem.

Ivan: not being the slightest bit technical I prefer to stick to the tried and trusted so have thus far avoided Bets. Will I be obliged to adopt it?

I recommend you create a new account and blog to try it out, if you haven't done that already. The problem is you can't change back.

I found the post editor to be nightmarishly slow in Firefox: It would frequently hang for two or three seconds at a time. When that happened, I'd keep typing: The keystrokes go into the message queue and sooner or later the window will handle them. Right? That's how Windows applications work. Er, no, wrong: It would drop keystrokes. What does it take to saturate a message queue in Windows? I don't recall. But it was a real mess. Partially to be blamed on Firefox, no doubt.

Even if it didn't drop stuff, a two or three second hang every few words is intolerable. Maybe they've fixed that; it's a beta, after all. But try it before you commit.

It also requires you to be logged into the right gmail account. If that's not the one you use for mail, it's a pain in the ass. It's utterly gratuitous, too; there's no reason for that to be a requirement.

Now, you may observe that my reasoning here is primarily based on a sort of, "I tried it once and it pissed me off, so you shouldn't use it because I've got a personal grudge against it" sort of logic. Which isn't, strictly speaking, "logic", in the formal sense of "reasoning that can't be trivially shown at first glance to be absolutely untrammelled bullshit". But I don't see that as a reason not to take my remarks seriously.

I had no idea that Ivan had ambitions towards being the next Oscar Wilde but I think I speak for all his readers when I say that I offer his efforts my full support.

I've resisted the temptation to move to beta. Frankly, I think the Book of Revelation has something in there about beta being "the mark of the beast."

No thanks.

Cheers.

The 'Beta' is also a measure of risk for stocks, Randall. Quite appropriate, given the risk of mucking up yor blog. Maybe the right time to adopt it is a year from now when they've sorted out the problems.

I succumbed; now I have no idea how to post images.

Also I lost my voice. I'm sure it's connected.

Be warned.
