Flying rats

A feel-good story to start the week with, as a pelican shows unexpected community spirit by abruptly catching a pigeon and swallowing it whole.

An RSPB spokesman said "It is almost unheard of for a pelican to eat a bird. Their diet should be strictly fish."

So much for the experts. A fish-only diet is all very well for effete Western Pelicans, but this one is an Eastern White, from Siberia. I know from bitter experience that one eats whatever one can get out there…

The world’s dumbest pigeon, yesterday, about to meet his maker. Retarded even by the unexacting standards of his scrofulous confreres…

I enjoyed this picture. What was that pigeon thinking? We have many of Pelicans in the coastal areas around Adelaide. As far as I know they only eat fish here. Another sign of global warming?

We saw ir on the news last week 'no slur intended) and to see it happening was amazing and a bit frightening.

Ooh I'm getting brackets and commas mixed up now. I rather like it!

"who turned off the lights?" would be my guess, Colin.

Pi - I envy you that snippet. Maybe it'll turn up on YouTube...

Love how the self-appointed humanitarians tell pelicans they're only supposed to eat fish. And maybe Granola bars too, so supplement a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids. How dare a damn animal step out of line and offend contemporary public sensibilities? To judge by the picture, I bet the pelican is also white and male; poor bastard's in for some serious scolding. Maybe they should send him to a sensitivity training seminar.

Sometimes, I just don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Funny, Des - that's just what the pigeon said...

That'll be 'old white man' for you, distinguished Dimitrie. Someone has to stand up for the nouveaux opprimés, dammit. The voice of the newly exploited, I am.

It's dead white males that we have an epidemic of, around here.

Which is odd, because I don't really have a problem with dead ones.
