Department of Defence? I wonder what key words I managed to trigger. The post mentions gays, but this is the Australian DoD we’re talking about here, not the British one, so that can’t be it.

Anyway, they obviously have time on their hands down there, as once in our mystery guest was in no hurry to leave…

Your tax dollars at work.

Far be it for me to begrudge anyone their little break. At least Defence is a department with a real purpose in life, unlike those wastrels at Education or Health. So, many happy returns, whoever you are - you have taken us a small yet significant step further in our journey, and we salute you for it!

The ranks and insignia of the Australian Defence Forces, yesterday. Apparently this blog is now an honorary Seaman, tho’ I may have misheard…

Do you think the eleven minute visit was because the Austrailian DoD likes you or because it was trying to understand you?

They are Austrailians, you know.

Cheers.

Oh yes, it's not upside down so we just don't stand a chance.

Let me just say [why aren't my words appearing the right way up??] that if you were living and working in Canberra you'd probably spend all day reading blogs too. All hail the 'tard from Canberra - this is my tax well spent.

What manner of Navy is that where being an Able Seaman is a distinction? I mean, how low do they start in Australia? Are most other sailors down under 'special' seamen--as in 'special education'?

I can't believe these are the descendents of the braves who fought at Gallipoli. And to think that they're in Iraq to protect the Japanese contingent!

I get all excited when someone is on my site of over an hour but Son 2 pointed out they had probably gone to the loo and forgotten they were on. Hey ho!

Randall, for shame - they were clearly both amused and enlightened. If they were perplexed, they'd just attack the monitor, a bit like budgerigars with mirrors.

NPB - not a Canberra fan, then? I'm sure it's a lovely place, really - full of historic sites, gracious architecture and high culture. Not bad for a town founded a week ago last Tuesday.

Des - that might be what they're there for, but there's no guarantee that they're trying very hard.

And Pi, you can tell Son 2 from me that he's most ungallant and should abase himself at your feet for doubting your appeal. I also suggest posting some baby pics of him for good measure. I'm sure he'll be a lot less lippy in future...

Those braves who fought at Gallipoli mostly failed to leave descendants. Very high mortality rate. Of course, we've now imported the opposition to carry on the tradition.
I rather thought it was the army and not so much the navy in Iraq - didn't really want them there in the first place so I guess it doesn't matter too much.
It's not really a very good navy; I think the buggery has gone to their heads.

Query: Austrailian?

Coo, look at me coming over all defensive and nationalistic!

You've not been to Canberra have you?

N.P., that's what happens you're trying to post a quick comment and read yesterday's mail at the same time.

My bad.

Cheers.

Shit, I thought I'd been spelling it wrong for years... :p

In the Middle East if they're not getting bombed they're getting stoned. All things considered you'd think they'd be more mellow...

Thank you for your kind words and as a reward - I know you appreciate beauty- go to http://www.blogger.com/profile/15895460 and see her yesterday's post.
Such excellent photography.

If that naked lady in front of the mirror is Son 2, Pi, I must say that those were not the kind of baby pics I had in mind. :)

May I direct you to this fact sheet to dispel any myths or prejudices about Canberra?

Thanks, Rod - very informative. Although is does make it sound rather more exciting than in real life...
